The Journey
Fast-forward to my first day of internship; as I ride my bike down the A41, the crisp morning air fills my lungs, a mix of nervous energy and sheer excitement coursing through me. Anticipation continually compounds with every traffic light I pass; I do not know what to expect—a completely new dynamic and experience is about to unfold. Questions about the day ahead flicker in my thoughts like the lights overhead—will I make a good impression? How will I apply my knowledge in a professional setting? That day, I am not just a student; I’ve transformed into a budding professional stepping into a world of possibilities, ready to learn, contribute, and hoping to make a difference in the lives of others. The doors that lie ahead are not just an entry to a workplace, but a gateway to the future.
Leaving the main road, I turn onto a private path leading to DeSoutter Medical. It’s a three-minute cycle ride that feels like a journey through a serene painting. Vast fields stretch out on either side, their green expanse only interrupted by the rolling hills that extend as far as the eye can see. If I didn’t know otherwise I would have thought this was a green screen. This tranquil landscape, with its natural beauty, forms the perfect equilibrium between nature and construction, harmonizing the serenity of the countryside.
As I continue down the private road, the building finally comes into view. It’s towering and intimidating, a testament to the scale and ambition of DeSoutter Medical. The structure rises against the backdrop of hills like a fortress of innovation, its presence both commanding and inspiring. The exterior is a marvel of modern architecture—tall, sleek, and futuristic, with clean lines and reflective surfaces that glint in the sunlight.
Entering the premises, I find myself in one of the two quads inside the facilities, the expansive courtyards offering a moment of calm before the day’s challenges begin. The quads are meticulously maintained, with manicured lawns and minimalist sculptures that add a touch of artistry to the high-tech surroundings.
Inside, the facility is a vision of cutting-edge sophistication. The interiors are bathed in a pristine white that amplifies the sense of cleanliness and precision. The walls seem to glow with an almost ethereal light, reflecting the facility’s commitment to sterility and innovation. Long, wide corridors stretch out like arteries, connecting various departments and laboratories.
Every corner of DeSoutter Medical exudes a surreal feeling, as if stepping into the future. The air is filled with a quiet hum, the sound of advanced machinery and the soft footfalls of professionals moving with purpose. Laboratories are equipped with the latest technology, where white-coated scientists and engineers work diligently on groundbreaking medical devices. Glass walls offer glimpses into rooms filled with intricate instruments and monitors, the epicenter of medical advancements.
The large scale of the facilities is awe-inspiring, a labyrinth of state-of-the-art laboratories, manufacturing units, and offices that seem to stretch endlessly. Like a modern-day castle, it stands as a beacon of progress and technology, its imposing architecture a symbol of the cutting-edge work conducted within its walls.
Induction day begins
Upon arrival, I was greeted by Andrew, who guided me to where I needed to be. His warm welcome set the tone for what was to come. He showed me the way to the Zethon computer science research lab, a hub of innovation and technological product research. It was here that I was introduced to Milan, the head computer scientist at Zethon.
Milan stood tall, his presence both commanding and approachable. His hair, dark and meticulously combed, framed a face that seemed to be in a constant state of quiet contemplation. Despite the casual atmosphere of the lab, Milan’s attire struck a balance between laid-back and professional. He wore a crisp white shirt, its sleeves rolled up just enough to suggest a readiness for hands-on work, paired with neatly pressed khaki pants that hinted at a sense of ease and practicality.
As he approached, I noticed the subtle details that completed his look: a sleek leather belt, a simple yet elegant watch, and shoes polished to a mirror finish. Milan’s style was a reflection of his persona – unpretentious yet undeniably meticulous. He moved with a purpose, his stride confident and steady, suggesting a man who had walked these halls many times, lost in thought yet fully aware of his surroundings.
The induction day was meticulously orchestrated, showing the company’s dedication to seamlessly integrating new interns into their culture and business operations. Milan guided me on an exhaustive tour of the Aston Clinton site, which was a revelatory experience, exposing the entire lifecycle of a product from its inception to its delivery. We navigated through the research laboratories, where innovative ideas are born, continued through the electronics manufacturing and testing zones, and reached the heart of the production line. The journey extended to the meticulously maintained shipping and packing areas, referred to as “clean rooms,” and culminated at the customer support and IT support departments, before observing the final products being loaded onto trucks for dispatch.
The facility itself reminded me of the high-tech environments often portrayed in films, with access cards and verification keys required at every threshold. It was a privilege to traverse such an avant-garde setting, knowing that it would be the foundation of my learning experience.
One of the most captivating aspects of the day was discovering the ongoing enhancements to the facilities to accommodate cadaver testing. DeSoutter not only manufactures drills for autopsy purposes but also rigorously tests their orthopedic hand drills on cadavers prior to live pre-clinical trials. This unwavering commitment to excellence and safety was profoundly impressive. Previously, DeSoutter would have had to coordinate sessions at universities or hospitals for surgeons to convene and utilize the new drills, a process fraught with logistical challenges and inefficiencies. Thus, the establishment of on-site cadaver testing labs has significantly streamlined operations, liberating valuable time and resources.
Milan also elucidated the symbiotic business relationship between Zethon and DeSoutter. It was enlightening to comprehend that Zethon’s primary customer is DeSoutter, which subsequently sells directly to hospitals acquiring their consoles and drills. This insight into the company’s ecosystem provided a lucid understanding of how a rudimentary product idea can evolve into a tangible reality.
I felt privileged to be part of this team, even if only temporarily, and I am eager to contribute to their mission with utmost dedication.
